VOLVER

For me, the mark of seeing a good film, reading a good book, viewing beautiful works of art or seeing a good concert is the feeling of satisfaction I have afterward. I will have been thoroughly entertained from start to finish and given my undivided attention for that couple hours it took to experience the thing.

Tonight I had the pleasure of seeing Pedro Almodovar's latest film, Volver. It was all the rage at Cannes this year and now I understand why. I've been a fan of Almodovar since Woman on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, and Volver sees the "return" of that film's star, Carmen Maura. Although, Maura is always good - I was especially impressed with Penelope Cruz - who in American films just seems like another beautiful woman with Spanish accent - but in Volver she shows depth and a natural presence. She carries this film and does it well. I read a review that said that Almodovar approaches his characters with humor and honesty, but most of all with compassion. I would have to agree. It makes no difference what they've done or haven't done, said or haven't said, you find yourself truly feeling for the character(s). It's as if you personally understand the characters' plight no matter how foreign it is, and simultaneously admire their resolve to fix it.

It takes a talented writer and director to tap into the human psyche that way - and that is a talent that, sadly, most Hollywood movies don't seem to possess these days. Like most of Almodovar's best films, this story centers around female characters and all deliver moving performances with tenderness and strength.

I can't recommend this film enough.

Wow. You should be a film reviewer! (I love Almodovar, too.)

OMG! I totally love Almodovar. Habla La Mujer was recommended by a friend with whom I share tastes & was not disappointed. You totally convinced me to seek this out. Fantastically written review!
