I have completed my fifth full day at the new job, and if you could peek into my head you might see something that looks like this:
<---
I vacillate between "Oh, I am so getting this." and "Oh, shit - I am never gonna get this!"
In spite of being currently overwhelmed in information overload, I am VERY happy with my new gig, but sometimes wish I could "cut to" six months from now when I know (mostly) everything I need to know and it's just another busy day at the office. But I rather like being a "new guy" and one of the most amusing ways to cut the stress of training at a new job is to exercise your mind in amateur psychological profiling. After the initial tour and formal introductions - I now run into people in the pantry and observe... Who uses the half & half and who uses the powder non-dairy creamer? After taking the last cup of coffee, who starts brewing anew and who walks away from an empty pot? Who speaks up during staff meetings, and who sits silently by and doodles? Whose desk is riddled with knick-knacks and whose desk is manicured to a T? And most importantly, who has the red stapler? I am sure I am being "profiled" in kind, after all - you don't get a second chance to make a first impression.
I said it once and I'll say it again - I am extremely happy to be there, and although my employee photo ID may some day qualify to be posted on the Smoking Gun (yes, it's that bad) I feel like I've turned a corner and I am just beginning to head into what promises to be a truly happy new year.

oh, we SO have to see that picture ID, my friend!!
You're my idol. I need a new job just like you.
Martina - it will not be posted here, but look for it on the Smoking Gun
Roonie - send out those resumes!
Congrats for making it through five days. Don't obsess over the red stapler too much, now. They might put your office down in the boiler room.
Eh, your photo can't look that bad, now can it?
My favorite profiling game is "Who picks up the grody-yet-current issue of the Post off of the bathroom floor to read while they're taking a dump?"
Hooray for your new gig! Also, I really do have a red swingline on my desk. I could set the building on fire...
Let me know as soon as you remember the face and name of everybody on your team.
I mean it.
Awesome to hear that someone else feels the same way. That anxious point when you're starting a new position, not knowing anything. You have a head on straight & aren't freaking out (see: what I did about 3 months ago).
In a few months you'll have a better idea. But argh! It's so tough.
Thanks for all the well-wishes, everyone.
Emily - I remember your new job posts, but at that time I didn't even think about getting a new job and now I can completely relate!
