one year later...THE BEATLES LOVE

It's no secret (the blog's a massive clue) that I'm a Beatles fan and that they are my favorite musical group of all time. Yes, they were talented song-writers, musicians, innovators, groundbreakers... but mostly I find the combination of the four to be... magical. And I believe that this magic has transcended age and time which is why the music continues to re-emerge every so many years and sustains a world-wide audience. Their songs are rock'n'roll standards. One day I'll blog about all of this LOVE I have for the Fab Four in more detail, but today I find myself surrounded by a little Beatle Mania here on the west coast. Yesterday, Ringo and Paul, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono herself were on Larry King Live in Las Vegas to mark the one-year anniversary of the opening of Cirque du Soleil's "Love." [the newly mixed songs are terrific - recorded in mono but now presented in 5.1 and produced by George and Giles Martin]. The CD has been in my rotation for nearly a year now, and I am making plans to FINALLY go and see the show.

Tonight at Amoeba Music in LA, Paul (and the rumor is Ringo also) will perform a free in-store mini-concert. I wrestled with taking off from work and going... but alas I had too many things going on today. Plus, I'm sure it's a mob scene there right now.

A little trasnscript from the LK show sums it all up:

(Cirque du Soleil's) LALIBERTE: ... we -- this is where we connect, because at the end, we share the same values. We believe in a better world, and we are love carriers. And they did that with their songs and music; we're doing that with our show, and this is where we connect.

MCCARTNEY: That's the big key to it all. The show is called "Love." I think one of the things that we're probably proudest of -- I certainly am -- is that the message was always love, in any form we portrayed it. And that's something to be really proud of.

Love, love, love them. But you've figured that out by now. When I was thirteen, I spent a summer walking to the library and listening to the white album over and over.

But if you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother you have to wait
Don't you know it's gonna be Alright

After being the first love of my musical life, I can never outgrow them, unlike every other band I've had a love affair with. I've moved away and come back many times, and they're just as powerful and magical as they were that summer.

That love is all
And love is everyone
It is knowing
It is knowing

Thanks, I smile every time I see the Rubber Soul logo up there!

Aw, Jim - we're rubbersoul-mates, after all.

Hey, I wanted to add this. I had been wary of picking up "LOVE". I don't know, just a little nervous about things I hold terribly dear in their original form being remixed, I guess? On your recommendation, I got it. It's wonderful, of course. Tears in my eyes in a couple of spots...

Jim - Glad you like it! I wouldn't trust re-mixes on these songs with ANY producer but George Martin (and son Giles) - unless it was Paul himself.

I love "Love"! I saw Ringo Starr and his Allstar Band in concert about eight years ago. Todd Rundgren; Jack Bruce; and Gary Brooker, the vocalist/keybordist from Procol Harem, were the members of his Allstar Band. They were all top notch but Ringo had that coolness and presence about him that only comes with being one of the fab four.

They did an awesome version of "White Room" with Jack singing, of course. I never knew Ringo could double as Ginger Baker.
