I had actually hoped to write different blogs in between this series... but nothing has come to mind to write about. So here's part two for all you animated robot lovers worldwide... and you know who you are.
Several years ago I had the pleasure of working on the DVD release of The Iron Giant
It was the first time that I sat at my desk at work in front of my computer screen and held back sobs. It is really a lovely little film. [IMDB: The film is about a giant metal machine that drops from the sky and frightens a small town in Maine in 1958, only to find a friend named, Hogarth, that ultimately finds its humanity and saving the towns people of their fears and prejudices.]
When the DVD was released I went out and bought it for the tribes of nieces and nephews... and, uh, a copy for myself. As part of the promotion, each DVD package included a mini Iron Giant action figure - which I was almost more excited about than the DVD. My nieces and nephews liked the movie, but felt the action figure should have been bigger for playing purposes - you see "he's supposed to be BIG... a GIANT"... I was told. So he wasn't in proportion - even in their imaginary play worlds.
I am not sure what became of the other mini Iron Giants that were distributed to my family... but mine enjoys a prominent place on my desk along with the other objet trouvé - which I guess are all miniature reminders of memories and moments that I've enjoyed and cherished (even movie moments). In essence, they all help to cope with the stark reality of the workplace... even though in this case, it was in the workplace that I discovered The Iron Giant.
Oh, the irony!

I do love the Iron Giant, and I believe that everyone's desk should have things that make you remember what it's like to not be at a desk all day.
You should blog about that.
