CHICK FLIX

I'd like to call myself a "movie buff" because I've ALWAYS been a movie fan since I was very young. Maybe it was because I grew up in Los Angeles (burbs as a kid) - or maybe it's just who I am. I love all kinds of movies in all genres - running the spectrum from silents to documentaries to epics to animation to shorts to episodics. I even like trailers. Not all movies are artful - some are just purely entertaining, but it's even better if you have both. I have come to admit that seeing a chick flick is, in fact, a guilty pleasure of mine.

A "chick flick" - usually a romantic comedy/drama, something that reeks of sentimentalism. If there's one thing I hate is to be stereotyped (especially by gender) even though many stereotypes have a basis of some fact. Anyhow, me and two of my best girlfriends A and K try and get together weekly to hang out and exchange the amusing and sordid details of our lives and how we live them. This week we chose to see a chick flick. I was secretly looking forward to seeing this movie all week. I saw the trailers and the commercials and I KNEW it would be exactly as it was advertised - a tsunami of sentimentality and romance. This movie delivered on all counts - it is what I expected and hoped for.

In this movie, everyone was "perfect" - the way they looked- their careers - their cars - their clothes - their homes - their pets - and of course they are smart, noble, funny and warm-hearted. But most especially it's the things they say... exactly the things you want to hear a man/woman say to you. It's movies like this that make you take that mental vacation and escape the toils of REAL life. Pure unadulerated fantasy, and that is what I love about the chick flick.
