For as far back as I can recall - I cannot remember ever NOT owning a radio.
For Christmas one year, my parents bought my brother and I matching little transistor radios with leather carrying cases. Sometimes I'd sit with it in the car in the driveway on a rainy Saturday and just listen to music. My favorite radio was this larger portable unit that had colored lights that flashed to the bass of the music behind a frosted glass cover in the front (it looks similar to the left pic, but I can't find a picture of it. I am sure the radio somewhere in my parents' garage as NOTHING ever gets thrown away there).
So I'd sometimes stay awake long into the night listening to top 40 hits... like this one (who knew there was a video?) - thank you, YouTube!

back in the day (late late 60's) the thought was that the jukebox was passe and the new thing was going to be paying to WATCH your favorite songs. Some adventerous folks put in small viewing machines in cars and clubs (essentially a jukebox w/ a TV on it) and Bands such as The Kinks, The Doors and many others created short films to go with songs. The idea never caught on but bands still made the shorts for promoters, fan clubs etc.. this library of clips was later the inspiration for MTV, courtesy of one Mike Nesmith.
