MOCA AFTER DARK

Coca Cola Plan 1958

Minutiae 1954

"Painting relates to both art and life. Neither can be made. (I try to act in that gap between the two.) A pair of socks is not less suitable to make a painting with than wood, nails, turpentine, oil and fabric. A canvas is never empty."
- R. Rauschenberg, 1959

The first of my new year's resolutions was to start writing in this blog. DONE.

The second was to start going to museums more often. DONE.

OK, well, it took me till June, but I finally got out and attended the Robert Rauschenberg: Combines show at MOCA in downtown LA. Rauschenberg is credited for changing the method of collage by using several abstract materials in his pieces. The show is an overview of his works, but a very well-assembled one. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to those interested in abstract expressionism. For a long time I used to attend lots of gallery shows and exhibits, but in the last few years I've sort of fallen out of that groove - hopefully now there will be more to come.

ROBERT RAUSCHENBERG: COMBINES May 21-Sept 4
